Builds and Deployments — the difference
📍 Where to find this in the UI
- Builds: Infra → Builds tab
- Deployments: Infra → Environments → {env} → Deployments
This is a distinction that can trip you up:
| Build | Deployment | |
|---|---|---|
| What | Converts code into a Docker image | Launches an existing image in an environment |
| Level | App (architecture) | Environment |
| Concerns | A ServiceDefinition | A ServiceInstance |
| Result | An image available in the registry | Pods running in an environment |
Typical workflow
- You commit code and push to
main - Wakastart builds:
mainHEAD → image:abc123 - Once
SUCCEEDED, in AUTO mode, the image is deployed to the environments watchingmain - Wakastart applies → pods are updated (rolling update with no downtime)
- The Deployment appears in the env's Deployments tab, with status
IN_PROGRESSthenSUCCEEDED
Deployment modes (DeploymentMode)
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
AUTO | Auto-deploy as soon as a build on the watched branch succeeds |
MANUAL | You explicitly choose when to deploy (and which image) |
